The Universal Mary Sue Litmus Test

Disclaimer: This test was shamelessly stolen from Springhole.net, and modified to examine from a reader's point of view, rather than an author's

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST AND READ THEM CAREFULLY - MISUSE OF THIS TEST WILL CAUSE INACCURATE RESULTS!

How to use this test:

First, if you're unsure of what a Mary Sue is, please read this page.

Answer all questions for which the answer is 'yes' or 'technically yes' unless the item mentioned is commonplace in the universe you are writing for. If most people in the setting have wings, skip the question about flying. If it's established that anyone can have technicolor hair (as in many anime shows) pink coifs don't apply as "unusually" colored hair. If the character had an exotic name because most of the characters' names are made up, you would not answer yes to having an unusual-sounding name that you made up. Sue-ness is relative.

If you see a question that looks like it's been linked, rest your cursor over it - it contains a tool tip, which should contain further information on the subject.

Also, this test is divided into three sections to help prevent confusion and speed up the testing process:

Part 1 - All Characters
Questions that pertain to all characters everywhere.

Part 2 - Fan Characters & Newcomers
Questions for characters from sidestories that complement an existing setting.

Part 3 - De-Suifiers
Questions that subtract from the final score.

Furthermore, this test has never been nor probably will be perfect. At best, I can only offer it as a guide, not an instruction manual.

Part 3 - De-Suifiers
Answer for characters of any fiction type. These will subtract from the final score.

    • Are the character's faults/weaknesses ever made fun of, and/or use them as plot devices or gags?
    • Has the character ever been honestly selfish, petty, lazy, shallow, or pointlessly cruel?
    • Is the character really and honestly overweight, and stays overweight throughout the entire story? (A little bit of chubbiness does not count.)
    • Is the character honestly ugly, and stays ugly throughout the entire story?
    • Does the character get into a fight or rush into a situation without preparing for it - and get his/her butt completely owned?
    • Is the character out of shape, and stays out of shape for the entire story? (Not 'oh, man, I just don't think I can survive this triathlon,' but honestly, hinderingly wimpy?)
    • Is the character physically disabled, and has nothing to make up for it? (To quote Dr. Merlin, anyone who says "She's so pretty that it's like a disability because everyone hates her or wants to have sex with her" will be summarily keelhauled.)
    • Is he/she truly mentally disabled in some way and has no powers because or despite of this?
    • Is the character human, 40+, and looks his/her age?
      1. Older than 60?
    • Does the character have a truly debilitating phobia that does not disappear at a crucial moment?
    • Has the character ever run away from anything simply because he/she was a coward?
    • If the character had a bad past with his/her parents/guardians, does he/she reconcile with them, or at the very least come to a sort of peace or a new understanding with them at any point? (the character does not necessarily have to be completely okay with what the other characters did.)
    • Has the character ever been in a situation that he/she had no way of overcoming on his/her own and had to rely on others for help?
      1. Did he/she give up without trying?
      2. Did he/she give up after failing?
    • If he/she eventually found a way of overcoming a problem that initially seemed hopeless, was it extremely difficult and/or took a really long time?
    • Does the character ever seriously question the morality of his/her actions and/or is left with a lingering doubt that he/she may not have done the right thing?
    • Does the character suffer post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of everything he/she has gone or goes through, and doesn't get over it after a dose of good loving/snuggling from his/her love interest?
    • Is the character ever manipulated or used as an unwitting pawn by someone without the aid of magical/chemical/technological/hypnotic mind-control?
      1. With tragic results?
    • Has the character ever misjudged someone else and discovered he/she was completely wrong about that person?
    • Does the character ever admit to being wrong, even if he/she doesn't really mean it?
    • Has the character ever ignored wrong-doings against him/herself and/or others because he/she simply didn't want to get into trouble?
    • Does the character act in odd and/or awkward ways that other people find strange and confusing rather than endearing, and these people aren't called or portrayed as foolish/stupid because of it?
    • If the character is all or partially non-human, does he/she react in very non-human ways or in ways more appropriate to his/her species that are not meant to be perceived as cute and endearing by the audience?
    • If the character is vampire, is he/she...
      1. A mindless killer?
      2. Maybe not mindless, but has no significant moral or emotional issues with killing/murder?
      3. Unable to have sex?
      4. Unattractive?
      5. Unable to overcome his/her dependance on blood?

Your total is:

0-5 Points

If your score isn't this low from clicking several De-Suifiers, it may be possible that the character is poorly-developed yet, or a potential Anti-Sue or Hood Ornament.

5-16 Points

Very low chance the character is a Mary Sue. Usually a very safe range to be in.

17-21 Points

Low-to-moderate chance the character is a Mary Sue. Generally a safe range to be in.

22-29 Points

Moderate-to-high chance the character is a Mary Sue. Still a safe-ish range to be in.

30-35 Points

High-to-very high chance the character is a Mary Sue. Risky range to be in.

36-49 Points

Extremely high chance the character is a Mary Sue. VERY risky range.

50+ Points

The character is almost certainly a Mary Sue, and a bad one at that. On the odd chance that he/she isn't, it's most likely you didn't read the instructions properly (some people don't do this, which causes freakishly high scores). If it's the latter case, read the instructions and take the test again.
